Central Museum of Prisoners-of-War

The Central Museum of Prisoners-of-War is a historical museum, which is why well-related stories are its speciality. The focus is not only on items that can be presented in showcases, but, above all, on the people to whom they belonged.

The museum has two seats – in the centre of Opole (at 3 Minorytów Street), and in Łambinowice – a small town in Niemodlińskie Forests.  In both places, you can visit exhibitions, take part in educational activities, and – in the case of Łambinowice – in an expedition deep into the forest. It is not an ordinary forest, because it hides moving stories about people from almost all over the world who, starting from the 19th century, not of their own free will, found their way here during subsequent wars – as captured soldiers, and even right after them – as resettled inhabitants.

The Site of Remembrance in Łambinowice is a vast area that is worth exploring actively, e.g., on bicycles provided by the Museum’s rental shop. While taking a stroll, being accompanied by a guide, along the historical and natural path you will not only learn interesting facts from the past, but primarily experience the aura of a place where traces of history intertwine with lush nature. Its uniqueness has also been recognized outside our country; two years ago, it became part of the prestigious European Heritage Label network.
